iVEE ESL

iVEE lessons provide specialized vocabulary that entry-level service workers need on the job. Current job categories offered are housekeeping and utility work (dishwashing and kitchen help). Additional job categories are in development. Vocabulary is introduced with descriptive pictures and videos. In Phase I, no reading is required, so even individuals who are not literate can learn workplace English with iVEE. Phase II introduces reading. Phase III brings in writing. Each lesson is self-contained, requiring no additional materials.

Using the principles of natural language acquisition, iVEE teaches job-related English to speakers of any language without the need for translators or translation. Research shows that learning a new language is more successful without the intermediate stage of translation. This proven teaching methodology has been used by the world's best language institutes for many decades.

A computer is necessary to access iVEE, but experience has shown that even students who have never used a computer before can learn to use iVEE with just a few minutes of instruction, which can be given by volunteers, supervisors, or colleagues.

To encourage learning English, some employers provide a workplace computer for student use, either on work time or on personal time. But many students have access to a computer elsewhere – at home, at a friend's, or at the public library.

Wherever the computer is located, students can progress through the lessons at their own pace. They can listen to the spoken words and phrases as many times as they wish. They can also go back and listen to words they heard earlier. They should master one lesson before going on to the next.

Student progress can be measured and tracked. Tests of the material learned can be administered by a third party to ensure mastery of each lesson. These tests are provided at no additional charge with the purchase of iVEE. In Phase I, the tests are of the student's comprehension of the spoken words and phrases. In Phase II, the tests also assess the student's ability to read the words and phrases. Phase III requires the students to write the words and phrases.
